It’s been more than 29 years since I woke up downtown in an unfamiliar basement and decided the way I was living wasn’t working for me anymore. After ten painful years of addiction, my life and my body were in shambles. I had allowed the drinking and cocaine to steamroll me, I was a perpetual pile of mush. I wasn’t in control of anything – my emotions, my actions or my reactions. I had worn out every alibi known to man and mastered finding blame in everyone else.

The realization that I had reached the end of my rope, came on July 28, 1986. The only problem was I hadn’t left enough rope to hang myself – I couldn’t even get that right! Disappointed by my lies, deceits and failed promises; everyone had deserted me.

Heroin use is an epidemic. It’s tragic. And, I’m doing my best to help people move beyond addiction; but it is part of why I get up in the morning.

You are what’s important to me! I want to find the best way to support you. How we treat each other and how we treat people who suffer from neurobiological impairment motivates me. My goal is to help you open up to your own thoughts, insights and feelings and look at what you are doing that either impedes or enhances your ability to heal.

As a board certified family physician, I have seen the ravages and effects of addiction on individuals, family members and communities. My experience led me to seek out expertise in treating addiction, not just from the medical perspective but truly catering to individual needs. I practice medicine from an integrative approach combining traditional Western medicine, Eastern philosophy and nutrition to aid patients in developing specific goals that are meaningful to them. I encourage patients to take responsibility for their health and be partners in their care.

My journey in health care began as a nurse, graduating from Huron Road Hospital School of Nursing in the mid 1980s. I quickly realized that I wanted to learn more and completed my Bachelor of Science degree at John Carroll University. I went on to medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, graduating in 1998. My intern year was completed at University of Wisconsin-Madison and my Family Medicine residency was at MetroHealth Medical Center.

This quote captures the essence of what drives me as a nurse. Every person I come in contact with is an opportunity to leave them with something that will help them feel better about themselves. It is the belief in endless opportunities that has brought me to Luna Living.

I have a permanent interest in the creative process, nature, and indigenous wisdom. Outside of my clinical therapy work, I am the director of a non-profit organization working with the Shipibo tribe in the Peruvian Amazon. I enjoy travel and adventure that brings alternative perspectives to my life and art.

My personal interests and education provide me with a unique perspective to treat disease through a creative synthesis of traditional and non-traditional approaches. Both converge by helping you build resources from a position of your strength.

I have come to realize that the profession of social work first chooses you, then you choose it. Knowing the truths about addiction, abuse, depression, poverty, and mental health, there is no way I can commit myself to another profession.

The majority of my social work experience is working with veterans who struggle with addiction, mental health, and homelessness. While working with them I found a passion for mindfulness techniques, and understanding the relationship between the mind, the body and the soul.

I was lucky enough to be brought up by two wonderful parents that made me the young man I am today. My mother is a founder of Luna Living, and if you haven’t read her story yet, I suggest you should. Her story hits home to me. Twenty-nine years ago she stopped drinking and started along the path that has brought her to where she is now. I often think about what would have happened if she didn’t stop drinking and she didn’t turn her life in the right direction. It’s a tough thing to think about because I most likely would not be here if she didn’t realize that her life could be worth living. My mother, Wendy, sobered up and with my father created my sister and me and has had what she describes as a life worth living, a life she never dreamed she could have.

When I think about this set of events and where it’s brought my mother and how it affected my existence, I begin to realize the gratification in helping other people create a similar story for themselves. What if one of the people who walks into Luna Living is my mother 30 years ago? What if that person is destined to create a child that will become the next Albert Einstein, or who themselves is the next Albert Einstein? What if their potential could amount to curing the worst diseases known to mankind? All these scenarios make me proud to help create and sustain a new organization committed to helping people with brain diseases people who have the potential to help the world move forward in a positive way. This belief in the true purpose of what Luna Living does is what prompted me to move away from Salt Lake City and back to a city in which I never thought I would live again.

Director of Corporate Compliance

I am a seasoned business professional with a track record for business development, visionary leadership and project management. I have a background in technical writing and development of standards used in the field of testing and measurement and was the recipient of the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) Award of Merit in 2004. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace College and a Chemical Dependency Counselor Associate certificate. I also hold a Certificate in Project Management from Kent State University.

My personal interests include a voluntary leadership position at a Women’s Wellness Foundation, a small non-profit whose mission is to help women recover from substance abuse, incarceration, domestic violence, and homelessness. My leadership helped establish the organization and is leading it to providing transitional housing for women in recovery. I’m also a co-leader of the Women’s Ministry at Elizabeth Baptist Church in the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland. My husband, Tony, and I enjoy spending time with family and our 2 Chihuahuas.

Luna Living lifestyle plan, detox and rejuvenation protocols, and other therapies may be used in combination with 12-Step Programs, 12-step Meetings, Addiction Counselors, Psychotherapists, Family Therapists, Spiritual Programs, Integrative Physicians, Nutritionists, and Executive Coaches.

Luna Living is CARF accredited, treatment facility for substance use disorders and intensive outpatient mental health care, located in Chagrin Falls, a suburb of Cleveland, OH. We are staffed by experienced medical personnel. We are open from 7:30a to 7:30p, seven days a week. Same day appointments are available. Our programs are partial hospitalization, medical detox, outpatient and behavioral health.
