I have come to realize that the profession of social work first chooses you, then you choose it. Knowing the truths about addiction, abuse, depression, poverty, and mental health, there is no way I can commit myself to another profession.
The majority of my social work experience is working with veterans who struggle with addiction, mental health, and homelessness. While working with them I found a passion for mindfulness techniques, and understanding the relationship between the mind, the body and the soul.
While at Case Western Reserve University I developed an Adventure Therapy Program for individuals seeking remission from addiction and mental health disorders. My entire life has been enriched by nature, ever since I was a child and learning how to kayak I knew the outdoors was home. With this program you can help your brain heal at an expedited pace; it’s allowing for homeostasis within oneself to be reestablished, and healing to occur by doing.
I attended the University Toledo and received a BA in social work. At UT, I played for the Women’s basketball team for all four years of my college career. While playing, I learned the true definition of teamwork, persistence and discipline due to the demands of competition, my desire to see my teammates reach their full potential and wanting to be a part of something bigger than myself.
Case Western Reserve University is where I obtained a Master of Science in Social Administration from the Mandel School of Applied Social Science of Case Western Reserve University with a concentration in adult mental health.
Malcom Forbes says, “You can easily judge the character of a person by how they treat those who can do nothing for them.” I believe character is having the patience and awareness that everyone can teach you something, which is the kindest act one can do for another. Every person, every moment, everything, is an opportunity for enlightenment.
The most reinforced insight through my experience is the significance of a relationship with you on your journey to remission. Every day my mission is to be kind and useful.
